WELCOME TO ETHIOPIAN COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL CENTER IN  OAKLAND

UPCOMING EVENTS

WHO WE ARE

Founded 'in 2001 at the request of concerned Ethiopians and Ethiopian Americans of the bay area, ECCC is widely regarded as the only Northern Bay area organization that advocates on the issues affecting the Ethiopian community in Oakland and surrounding cities. ECCC ’s services are tailored to meet the varying needs of Ethiopians as they struggle to make a transition to the way of life here in the United States. Since its inception, ECCC has assisted a great many numbers of Ethiopians in referral, outreach, transportation assistance and organizing an event with city officials.ECCC’s recognition by the city of Oakland, Mayor Jerry Brown, Congresswoman Barbara Lee,Councilman Ignacio de la Fuente, Councilwoman Nancy Nadel and others has provided the fuel necessary to get the needed exposure among the Ethiopian community and other communities to seek for our service and to get volunteers to assist our office in program development and implementation. As the result of this needed exposure, organizations have donated more than five computer systems to provide computer classes starting January 2005.

ECCC’s success in this short time is directly attributable to the generous, unfailing support of city governments, friends and supporters. In addition, the experience gained from the participation of the CDBG program for the first time, has helped us immensely to do a much better job for fiscal year 2005-2007. This organization is operated by volunteer individuals with a part time paid case management officer. Our goal is to have a full-time case management officer on a permanent basis to provide the needs of the community by formulating new programs that will be essential and beneficial to the Ethiopian Community in the bay area.

We have a great many Ethiopians and Ethiopian Americans residing in your district making a valuable contribution to the life and economy of the city of Oakland. In the past few years, a number of Ethiopians have migrated legally from the mainland Ethiopia to this area. It has come to our attention, that the assimilation of the new comers to America has not become as advertised and expected by others. ECCC would like to provide the necessary assistance to make the needed transition to ultimately become adjusted to this great country of ours. This action will alleviate the city and local governments directly and indirectly to focus on other communities. Our goal is to be partner with local, state and federal government, when it comes to the Ethiopian community here in the bay area and elsewhere.
